I had planned to use this writing for Father’s Day. However, as many of you know, my precious Daddy passed from this mortal life to his everlasting reward on Memorial Day. Therefore, I am posting this blog in his honor.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Father” is such a formal sounding word. It brings to mind an image of one who is highly respected but distant or impersonal. Mine is not distant or impersonal and you shall come to understand why I call him “Daddy”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I grew up the daughter of a preacher. Since Daddy started preaching before I was born, this was the only life I ever knew. I remember when I was little it seemed we went to church every day. I remember revivals, baptizings, cottage prayer meetings, and singings. God was always first with Daddy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daddy also had a radio broadcast. I remember sitting by the radio listening to Daddy’s broadcast wondering how he was able to get inside such a small box. The fascination part was that there seemed to be several other people in there with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daddy did have one hobby–bird hunting. He always had a bird dog. The last one he owned he named Rusty, after my boyfriend who later became my husband. Although he denied the naming part, he would tell you that it was the best dog he ever had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once on Thanksgiving he went hunting with Mother’s brother, Uncle Tom. Somehow Uncle Tom got in Daddy’s line of fire and Daddy shot him in the nose. I never figured out if this was the result of some family dissention, or if Daddy just thought Uncle Tom was a turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My daddy could always fix anything. He could until the day he died. Talk about McGyver, Daddy was the inspiration for the TV series. He once built a pigpen without a hammer or a saw. He could build a roaring fire with a match and one sheet of paper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now my husband is a wonderful guy but when we married, he was no handyman. If I had something break, I would call Daddy before my true love tackled the job and we had to call a specialist. My hubby’s fix-it skills have greatly improved over the years, which has lightened Daddy’s maintenance load.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you still have any doubts about what Daddy can do with limited resources, just look what he made out of us four kids (Well, a person can’t claim success for every undertaking in life.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I never knew Daddy to get into a fight or even a heated argument for that matter. He was always a master at turning the other cheek, and in his profession, many were the times he had to do just that. For you see, a preacher has to be without fault and without feelings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He must always be available and should always know the answer to everybody’s problems. He should never tire, and he needs no free time, bonus, or vacation. He must be preacher, teacher, music director, Christmas play director, committee chairman, youth director, carpenter, janitor, bus driver, counselor, ambassador, mediator, promoter, judge, encourager, comforter, motivator, policy maker, enforcer, organizer, confidant, and friend. Daddy had been all things to all people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He always had the capability to rise to the occasion. Such a versatile and talented individual should have had the standard of living equal to that of a doctor, lawyer, or executive. And he could have. Instead, the profession he chose, or rather was chosen for him by the almighty God, has not been without sacrifice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His love of God and concern for people often brought rewards other than financial. Nevertheless, there was always plenty to eat and wear at our house. We had a comfortable place to live and only had our electricity turned off once when Mama forgot to pay the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My Daddy was not the richest man in the world nor was he the most well-known. In a hundred years his name probably will not be found in the D volume of the encyclopedia or in any history book. But I wouldn’t trade dads with Donald Trump, Jr., Franklin Graham, Michael Douglas, Lisa Marie Jackson Presley, Ron Reagan, or Robert Todd Lincoln. Why? Because I had the world’s greatest Daddy. He provided me love, security, an example to live by, and a roadmap to heaven. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, on this day, I want to proclaim—<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I Love you, Daddy! I’ll miss You!!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
