All the clothes my two sisters and I ever owned were hand made by my Mama. She was an artist when it came to sewing and all our dresses were lovely. But to Mama, Easter called for something really special. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A few weeks before Easter Sunday she would make a trip to the fabric store to pick out the material for our Easter dresses. She would bring it home and spread it out on the kitchen table. She would carefully lay out the tissue paper pattern pieces on the cloth. Taking serving spoons from the silverware drawer in the kitchen she would place them on the pattern to hold it in place. Then with her big scissors she would cut out the dresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Next, she would take the cut-out pieces to her sewing machine that sat in front of the picture window in the living room. Her workspace was there because the light was good. Also, sitting there she was able to look out the window at her flowers and listen to the singing birds as she sewed. I remember her sitting there for hours sewing seams, flipping the fabric over and sewing again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In an incredibly short time, the dress would be finished. Mama would call me in from the yard where I had been playing. It was time to try on the new dress. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I can still remember the smell of the crisp new fabric of the dress as Mama pulled it over my head. Then she would straighten it on my shoulders and button it up the back. As she adjusted the new dress, she would break off a thread or two that still trailed from the freshly sewn seams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Usually, the dress had a long sash on each side of the waist. Grasping a sash in each hand, Mama would pull them to the back and tie them into a big bow. She would tug this way and pull that way until she got the bow just right. Then she would spin me around, pulling and tugging here and there, making sure the dress fit just right. Taking a step back she would stand and take in her masterpiece. Her eyes would shine with pride, and she would tell me how lovely I looked in the new dress. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I remember one year my Easter dress was made of light blue checked fabric. It had puffed sleeves and several yards of material created a billowy gathered skirt. She made a pinafore of light blue sheer to wear over the dress. I thought it was beautiful. I thought I was beautiful with it on. Mama assured me that I was. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Easter Sunday morning was so exciting! I don’t remember much about baskets and bunnies but dressing up for Easter was so very special. This morning we were going to worship a risen savior and it was especially important that we look our very best. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Arriving at the church, we girls would get out of the car and wait impatiently while Mama checked one more time to make sure that every sash was tied, and every button was buttoned. Then Mama would tie my little brother’s shoes again, straighten his new bowtie, and give him a hug. Daddy would tuck his Bible under his arm and take our little brother by the hand. As Mama walked beside Daddy, we girls would follow them up the steps and into the church. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The day seemed blindingly beautiful. As a little girl I didn’t completely understand the significance of the day, but I could feel the excitement. I could experience the joy. It was a happy soaring feeling like none other. It was the knowledge that today is special, I am special, because someone died for my sins to provide my salvation. And today, HE IS RISEN!!!!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
